Hi,
I have been running the Private Internet Access version of VPN system in my Mint 17.1 quite happily for many months but for some reason my new Mint 17.2 [on another hard drive] produces an error message when I try to edit the network connections. Apparently it needs "org.freedesktop.networkmanager openvpn". Of course openvpn is installed. I'm rather surprised that since they are a supporter of Mint, there isn't a complete script available for our version/s of Mint. There are a couple of well illustrated ones for Ubuntu but which one exactly applies to Mint? I'd rather not have to guess what to do if at all possible. Anyone have some thoughts?
Thankyou,
Griz.

Re: Installing PIA VPN in Mint 17.2 - anyone managed it?
I am a newbie and my knowledge is limited but I was able to get PIA VPN to work with 17.2 by installing it with a Beta version and a tar.gz file. This method created a new folder under "Applications" called "Other" and created an icon for PIA VPN.
I found it at this link, https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/f ... linux-beta.

Hi Gordon,
Thank you very much for your post. The link solved my problem completely. I had to re-install 17.2 owing to the trail of wreckage from my earlier attempts and after that the program installed easily. Again, thank you for your trouble.

Still running 17.1 but ditto here ... worked like a charm.
Anyone know how to use the port settings for even more security?
I'm using the auto settings right now. Thanks.

Re: Installing PIA VPN in Mint 17.2 - anyone managed it? SOL
I have a related problem. I also followed the steps to install beta version in Mint 17.2. It did seem to install, and I get the proper icon under "Other." However, when I try to connect I get a message the app has not started. The icon in the tray may turn green for a few seconds, the it goes back to red. I e mailed PIA tech support, but they have not responded. Any ideas?
Re: Installing PIA VPN in Mint 17.2 - anyone managed it? SOL
PIA Tech Support is the absolute pits ... which doesn't change the fact that (sadly?) PIA is hailed as one of the best VPN services out there, out of dozens. I even found a nitty gritty comparison of roughly 25 such services and PIA came in as one of the top 5. Two of the top five had to do with TOR which doesn't do anyone any good who wants to browse, shop, and communicate as most people Online do these days.
So with that said, I would suggest joining the PIA forums which I've found to be somewhat more helpful, and also to troubleshoot your own system. PIA works like a charm with Mint 17.1 and I would imagine that it should continue to work with the latest edition of Mint. I don't know about you, but we're using WiFi sticks on our computers which sometimes conflict with the built-in WiFi of the laptop ... causing WiFi to either shut off completely, or to run so slowly as to may as well be turned off.
If that's not the issue, then perhaps it has something to do with the installation of PIA not being installed ... LAST. According to some posts that I've located during the past couple of weeks, PIA should only be installed AFTER anything and everything else internet related has already been installed on your Linux machine. Browser, Email, Torrent Client, Etc, all installed and running properly ... then installing PIA ... with nothing else internet related being installed thereafter.
Is it possible that you didn't enter the user & password correctly after the PIA installation, thereby causing it to shut off after running just a few seconds?
Is it possible the you installed a "bad" region or a region that's so far away ... or so overburdened with traffic ... that the distance is too great in order to work properly on your system? When I first installed PIA my selected region was Japan. Oh my gosh, everything worked ... but dirt dirt slow. Then I switched to a region (Country) much closer to my own, and since then everything has been working very well.
Do keep this in mind ... you'll more than likely lose anywhere from 50% to 90% of your standard download/upload bandwidth after installing PIA. That's actually normal. So if you already have a pretty slow connection, then the installation of PIA could actually work out as being detrimental to your needs. You have to decide for yourself what's more important. Security, or speed?
Sending & Receiving of Emails ... works by default. Well, almost anyway. You can receive right after the proper installation. But if you have "mail.dot" or "smtp.dot" mail servers, you may need to contact PIA tech support with a support ticket to request whitelisting your mail servers. This too is normal and something that we had to do for our emails since we run our own root server in Europe.
Last but not least ... our USB printer which is directly connected to our router as a share for all of the computers in our home, only works when we disable PIA for the print jobs.
