SwiftFox

I've just installed SwiftFox on Bianca (homepage is getswiftfox.com). It is essentially a faster optimised version of Firefox for Linux and my particular processor (Athlon 64, though on their home page they supported just about everything). It does run a bit faster aside from that it's just like Firefox. I've checked it doesn't seem to have broken anything. I wondered if anyone else had used it and what their experience was?

less than impressed. spelling correction doesn't work and its not a lot faster.

Just a little more background on Swiftfox. Personally I tried it and really didn't see much of a point. The changes from Firefox are minimal really, but the "developer" doesn't seem to be too interested in giving back either.

I quite like swiftfox, the developer does not pretend that it's not an optimised firefox, in fact he attributes a great amount of credit to firefox (and rightfully so).

The optimisations do, in my opinion, create superior browsing speed and with compatibility for plugins and all else, it still has the advantages of firefox.

I would say swiftfox is to firefox what linux mint is to ubuntu.

The issue of licensing is debatable, the article pointed to does not credit Jason Halme for making the source available on the products webpage.

Anyhow, one feature of swiftfox which I do not like is that I had both swiftfox and firefox installed, some time later if I try to open firefox, it says it's starting - and then swiftfox opens.

i use swiftfox becuse firefox crashes fiesty for no clear reason.

With the spell checker in swiftfox not working try this

First type about:config in the address bar

In the filter bar type spell

The line that says layout.spellcheckDefault i think has a default of 1 change this to 2

make sure the line that says spellchecker dictionary is set to en-US or whichever dictionary you are using i am using en-GB

close and restart swiftfox, it worked for me

You're right just checked and the in line spell checker doesn't work

To get spell checker to work right click in box where you are typing and select >Languages>your default language or >Languages>Add Dictionary to add your preferred language then be sure it is enabled.

Personally I like Swiftfox and find it to be slightly faster than Firefox on my circa 2001 Dell P4 1.8 GHZ 256 MB RAM box. I understand the difference is more profound on newer more up to date hardware.

Also you can add it to repos in Debian based distros and install it with Adept or Synaptic.
