Red Octane Xplorer guitar...trying to install

Postby EKMA on Thu Feb 19, 2009 2:18 am

Have tried many, many different HOWTO's on how to get this installed and working so I can use it to play Frets on Fire. Current website I'm on (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=725405) says to make a Makefile...which I did. It then says to do sudo make...here's what I'm getting in Terminal (and yes, I'm in my root doing all of this...I realize I really shouldn't be but I am...):

_______________________________________________________________________________
cliff-desktop ~ # gedit ~/.xpad360/Makefile
cliff-desktop ~ # sudo make
make modules -C /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.22.14-generic SUBDIRS=/root
make: *** /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.22.14-generic: No such file or directory. Stop.
make: *** [all] Error 2
cliff-desktop ~ # cd root
bash: cd: root: No such file or directory
cliff-desktop ~ # cd makefile
bash: cd: makefile: No such file or directory
cliff-desktop ~ # cd .xpad360
cliff-desktop .xpad360 # sudo make
make modules -C /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.22.14-generic SUBDIRS=/root/.xpad360
make: *** /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.22.14-generic: No such file or directory. Stop.
make: *** [all] Error 2
cliff-desktop .xpad360 #

Any clues on what I'm doing wrong? I'm a complete noob and am getting very frustrated.

make modules -C /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.22.14-generic SUBDIRS=/root
make: *** /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.22.14-generic: No such file or directory. Stop.

The makefile does not work because it has a reference (or references) to /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.22.14-generic directory, which definitely is not present in your installation. Try to replace all references to the aforementioned directory with the one you have on your system. Enter this code in the Terminal to see what you do have:
Code: Select all
ls /usr/src/linux-headers-*

This is actually just a blind shot attempt, so please keep that in mind.

okay...looks like I've got "/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.27-7-generic:" and "/usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.27-7:".....not sure what the differences are but I'll try one, see if it works...if not, I'll try the other....thanks for the help garda...I would've never figured it out otherwise....

cliff@cliff-desktop ~ $ sudo apt-get install linux-headers-'uname -r' build-essential
[sudo] password for cliff:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package linux-headers-uname -r

Any Idea why I would get this? (the green text)

woohoo...got the controller to work (had to try a bunch of different HOWTO's to get it)...now just have to figure out how to get it to work on the game. Any clue? I'm gonna go to the FOF website and see if they can give me any pointers...but...if I don't have any luck, I would definitely appreciate any more help you guys can give.

Thanks for all of the help guys.

You got that error message because you made a typo. The command should have been:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install linux-headers-`uname -r` build-essential

Notice the back ticks (lowercase character of the tilde key) in place of single quotes that enclose uname -r. Anyway, I am glad to know you have managed to get around the obstacles yourself.

ohhhhhh...I didn't realize that's what those were....I thought they were single quote marks.....lol....

still no luck on getting the controller to work in the game, but, I know it works because of the test I ran...just gotta figure out how to get FOF to recognize it.
