wine install problem, software sources doesnt work

Postby batman1978 on Wed Mar 25, 2009 7:57 am

hi im a noob to linux, been with it a week

i want to install latest wine version 1.1.17 beta cuz the 1.0.1 doesnt cut it

since linuxmint is based on ubuntu, im suppose to follow ubuntu install instructions on wine

according to this page http://www.winehq.org/download/deb

it involves running software sources and adding some command lines to it

software sources wasnt installed (apparently)
i ran package manager, found it, checked the boxes for software sources -gtk , it asked that it needed python whatever thing i said yes,
i installed it.

install is done

but when i run software sources it doesn't do anything
rebooted, same thing.
now i installed software sources -kde
same thing..

how do i install wine now??

the other debian install instructions are for debian lenny squeezy and sid (i supposed those are other distros)

only version 1.0.1 is available on the package manager and the 'force version' option from the packages menu is greyed out

i want to get warcraft2 battlenet edition running, according to app database multiplayer it aint supported but they tested with 1.1.8 version

and i just dont swallow the idea that starcraft and warcraft3 are 100% supported and work online and war2 doesnt.

so im guessing if i get latest wine version it will work

war2 runs fine, but it crashes out when joining a server

If I type "wine" in the synaptic ("package manager") search box I get 1.1.17. Which version of mint have you installed? (eg LM 5/6, 32/64 bit, main/kde/xfce/fluxbox)

As for software sources I believe the reason it wasn't installed is because it doesn't work...

at synaptic package if i search wine i get wine version "1.0.1-0ubuntu2"

i read somewhere while i was browsing for a solution to hit the 'force version' while having wine selected.. option under package menu, that option is disabled

im running LinuxMint 6 felicia

i have hit reload but still the same..

OK, i installed this linux a week ago, and since then the mintUpdate icon on the tray has 268 recommended software updates available??

Do you advice me to update? i haven't done it cuz i got no clue about 90% of the programs on those list do..

Software sources should work now.
You have to enable the Community Repo(works for MInt 6 only) and install python-apt and software-properties-gtk.

Levels 1 & 2 are ok to install and level 3 is up to you.
Some packages in level 3 my have regressions and remove the ability for an app to do something it did before.
