did you try installing from the package manager? thats where i got my wine from and it works fine, dont think the beta will be much better really?

If I type "wine" in the synaptic ("package manager") search box I get 1.1.17. Which version of mint have you installed? (eg LM 5/6, 32/64 bit, main/kde/xfce/fluxbox)

As for software sources I believe the reason it wasn't installed is because it doesn't work...

Software sources should work now.
You have to enable the Community Repo(works for MInt 6 only) and install python-apt and software-properties-gtk.

Levels 1 & 2 are ok to install and level 3 is up to you.
Some packages in level 3 my have regressions and remove the ability for an app to do something it did before.
