AbiWord spell check issue

I tried to extract "aspell5-en-6.0-0" to the dictionary folder under AbiSuite 2.0 directory in my usr folder, but it will only let me extract to "/tmp/aspell5-en-6.0.0t", the result being the program won't read the dictionary when it's placed there. Spell Checker (F7) is still greyed out.

Anybody have any experience downloading and placing GNU Aspell or Enchant so I can get Spell Check capability in AbiWord?

A "normal" user does not have the rights to copy/move something to the usr folder. I don't know your program but there should be an option in the menus for importing a spell checker dictionary.
If not you'll have to sudo when you copy, but only do that if there is no import option

No, there isn't. And that's the one thing bad about AbiWord. That there is no built-in spell checker. At least not for the Linux version.

I may have to abandon this program because of it.

I just fixed mine-

sudo apt-get install aspell-en
or whatever language you want at the end. Then restart abiword.
You might want to also install abiword-plugins too.
