you can try VNC, there are quite few variants of VNC like realVNC, tightVNC... Also there is NX technology and its open source version - freeNX. Here are 2 references from wikipedia:

yes, provided you take care of firewall (also sometimes NAT may cause issues).
I have not used VNC / freeNX, so not sure if they automatically set up things for you regarding the firewall.
In my opinion, windows remote assistance is easiest to setup from the firewall & NAT point of view.
