HELP! dpkg interuption error wont let me install anything.

Postby sharxbyte on Mon Apr 06, 2009 12:23 am

Hey everyone.

Well, I finally converted to Linux... So far, I really love Mint 6, but as of this morning, I cant install any programs... Whenever I try(in the command line, or in the software/package managers) I get
dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.

running this(as a super user, or with the sudo command) produces
dpkg: parse error, in file `/var/lib/dpkg/updates/0039' near line 1:
newline in field name `#padding'
I navigated to this file, and after half an hour of trying to edit it in the terminal and fix the error, I succeeded(I think... the last 'padding' was missing the 'ng' on the end). This is probably not hard, but again, I'm new to Linux. But I'm still getting the same error messages. And now I'm also getting
Failed to run /usr/lib/linuxmint/mintInstall/mintInstall.py '/home/sharxbyte/.linuxmint/mintInstall/tmp/mintfiles/719.mint' 'sharxbyte' '/home/sharxbyte' as user root.
I'm at my wits end.. I'm now unable to install the correct wireless drivers(I have the atheros 5007, which is a problem in itself )

Any help? I really don't want to go back to Vista... But if I am required to be tethered to the wall, Or unable to install software, then there isnt much point, nomatter the superiority of the OS :(

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

try rebooting then go into recovery mode.choose the 3rd menu option to repair broken packages(dpkg).that should repair it.

Thanks for the response... I went into repair mode and did as you suggested, but i got the same error... This morning, I re-installed Mint, sorted out the wireless problem, and its been running reasonably well... Only a few bugs from the graphics card... I would still like to know how to fix the problem, should it arise in the future, but seeing as i fixed it for now, its not all-important... By the way, is there a way to back up the complete installation, incase something goes wrong?

Glad to hear about your transition to Linux!

RE: Backup. Wow choices. It all depends on what you want from the backup, how it is initiated (automatic or manual), CLI or GUI interface, etc. Some things to read and consider.

I'm sure you may see many other preferences on this like rsync and grsync which is at the heart of many apps and scripts.

sharxbyte,

There are several backup apps avaliable. The only one I have used is PING. It's a bootable CD so it's operating system agnostic. Go to http://ping.windowsdream.com/ and check it out. I've used it to backup and restore windows and Ubuntu installs but only to a second harddrive, I couldn't get the network setup to see my shares and I didn't try direct to CD. The instruction are good but are geared toward windows users especially how to backup to a network share.
