Mint 7 - Disable Fortunes in the terminal?

Postby AdamL on Thu May 28, 2009 8:25 pm

Hi,

First of all, thanks to Clem and the team for the best Mint release yet - it is amazing

I am hoping I can somehow disable fortunes in the terminal?

I though about removing "cowsay", however, it won't work as it is part of the mint-........ etc. package.

Can someone please help?

Thanks,

Adam

open terminal and type:

gksu gedit /etc/bash.bashrc

at the very end of the gedit file comment out the line:

/usr/games/fortune

Should work. If you comment it out rather than removing it you can reload fortune again without having to
re-code. Save the file and exit gedit.

Thanks. I turned them off as well. I like them, but they tend to slow me down. I use the terminal as a quick way to get something done, not spend time reading cute stuff. I'm surprised Clem took away the graphical tool for turning them on and off. In any case thanks for the tip. 8)

Worked fine for me too...

In previous editions of Mint it was easy to switch fortunes off in a very easy way.
Anyway, I don't think LinuxMint needs this kind of (crap) gadgets to be an attractive distro.

It's time to say goodbye to fortunes if you ask me.

I agree... I use mint for work, most of which is done on the terminal. The fortunes are fun but they get very annoying if you are working and opening many terminals. Not to mention that since I have my own .bashrc which i bring over from distro to distro, I had to edit /etc/bash.bashrc to remove them, a step that will not be obvious to a new user.

IMHO, the best thing would be to keep the fortunes but make it VERY easy to remove them, just as it was in Felicia.

What is commenting it out ? How does one ( noob) do it?
Thanks

Put one or two pound signs in front of it. Like this -
Code: Select all
## /usr/games/fortune

I can't delete "fortunes" application from my Mint 8. I did:

Code: Select all
sudo aptitude purge fortunes

then

Code: Select all
sudo aptitude search fortunes

and it's now

Code: Select all
p   fortunes                                               - Data files containing fortune cookies
p   fortunes-bg                                            - Bulgarian data files for fortune
p   fortunes-bofh-excuses                                  - BOFH excuses for fortune
p   fortunes-br                                            - Data files with fortune cookies in Portuguese
p   fortunes-cs                                            - Czech and Slovak data files for fortune

But still if I type "/usr/games/fortune" it shows quotes in Terminal...
How can I delete "fortunes" completely?

For people coming here via Google: there is a much easier way to do this, at least in Mint 11, and probably in previous versions. Open up gconf-editor (run from a terminal, or find it in the menus) and navigate to /desktop/linuxmint/terminal. There will be a "show_fortunes" checkbox. Uncheck it, close, and go on your merry way! No nasty symlinking or script editing necessary. :)
