Remote desktop/VNC setup with two Linux Mint computers

Postby Caps18 on Mon Jun 01, 2009 10:23 pm

I have been tying to set this up for a few days now, and I could use some advice. I have a Linux Mint computer at my parents house in Michigan running Linux Mint 7. I am in Ohio (or where ever else on the road) and would like to be able to connect to that computer to help them out sometimes. I am still running Linux Mint 4 because it works.

In version 7, there is a Remote Desktop dialog (or something like it) an those settings should be enabled. But is this only for use on the local intranet?

Is there and version of VNC installed by default? Which one is the easiest to setup and is there a website I could send my parents that shows step by step how to set it up? Sould I set it to use port 80 (I know that it open on any wifi access point I might be on for the client/viewer side.) Does the server need a different port open?

Thanks

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Hello, I hope I can help

Try the Gitso Project http://code.google.com/p/gitso/

First, the person giving support needs to:

Get your IP Address http://whatismyip.com/

1. Launch Gitso.
2. Click on "Give Support"
3. Click "Connect"

Second, the person who needs help, needs to:

1. Launch Gitso.
2. Click on "Get Help"
3. Type in the "IP Address" provided by the supporter
4. Click "Connect"

Now the person who needs help sits back and watches as someone else moves their mouse and operates their pc from afar.

Note: The person who is giving support needs to have port 5500 open to their machine which requires a port forward on a NATed network.

Greets

I'm sure Gitso works great when it is installed. But, I'm not a big fan of building stuff from source (especially when they reference a perl file ./makegitso.pl that is nowhere to be found). If I had a Windows computer or Mac, it would do it for me. And the sudo apt-get install gitso command didn't work.

It needs to be pretty simple, I ill need to talk my Mom through this over the phone.

And I don't understand why this isn't a bigger thing, I mean people in Iran and China have to use proxies to get around their countries firewalls, but the evil IT guys lock down the networks to port 80 only around here. Is there anything else that just works?

x11vnc
0 upgraded, 1 newly installed, 0 to remove and 207 not upgraded.
Need to get 458kB of archives.
After unpacking 1135kB of additional disk space will be used.
Err http://archive.ubuntu.com gutsy/universe x11vnc 0.8.2-2

Failed to fetch http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/u ... 2_i386.deb 404 Not Found [IP: 91.189.88.45 80]
E: Unable to fetch some archives, maybe run apt-get update or try with --fix-missing?

Why do I get this error, does the archive have a bad address, however I thought things were tested a little.

I did find a program called VNCrobot that works on the client side very nicely. Now to get the server setup... It may be setup already out of the box, but I haven't looked into it yet.

Try this link to download gitso for LinuxMint (.deb), Windows-Installer and for Mac.
