i install virtualbox from mint repos, but its a old version

Postby lucho115 on Tue Jun 02, 2009 1:53 pm

i install virtualbox from mint repos, but then i realise that its an old version (2.2.0) and the current is 2.2.4, so i add sun virtualbox repos and its key , but i cnt upgrade the soft, becouse mint repos are pinned al 700, so edit /etc/apt/preferences and add download.virtualbox.org with 800 (i just copy the mint line and change the url to sun one, and the 700 to 800) and it works, i upgrade the virtualbox to 2.2.4, but the question is: why in the mint repos there are an old version of virtualbox? and the other: its fine the way i used in /etc/apt/preferences or i have to add other lines(because linuxmint have other line) ?
thanks

The repositories being behind with new versions of software is not unique to Mint. Every distro I've ever tried was that way. It's that way to keep the system stable AFAIK.

ok but is the same version 2.2, the 2.2.4 is a maintenance release of the 2.2 series, the diferencies between 2.2.0 and 2.2.4 are bugs and security issues, its no the same to ship a 2.1 version and not to update to 2.2, its like ship firefox 3.0.8 and not to update to 3.0.10, have no sense i my opinon.
thks
