Anyone have any recommended programs for a starting linux newb

It depends on what you do. Everybody has their preferred applications.

In my case:
- For listening to audio files, Amarok 1.4
- Watch movies and DVDs I go with VLC player
- For graphic jobs I use Gimp, Inkscape and Krita
- Web browser for me is Opera

Well... As Microsoft would say; "Where would you like to go today?" There are 25,000 + packages in the Ubuntu repos alone.

Perhaps you should think about what kind of things you will likely be doing on your install. There is a good chance that most, if not all, of your needs have already been anticipated and appropriate programs have already been installed for you by default. :-)
