Java Crash Issues - RESOLVED

Postby red-e-made on Mon Jun 22, 2009 8:54 pm

Hello there

After installing Mint 7, I've been having some Java issues. Namely, for reasons unknown to me, running Java-based websites in my browser will sometimes cause the screen to freeze up, and then begin to break apart in a mosaic pattern. Restarting my machine is the only option.

I am using java version 1.6.0_13, Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_13-b03), Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 11.3-b02, mixed mode) with Firefox 3.0.11.

Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

The only difference with my machine is that I have Client VM (build 11.3-b02, mixed mode, sharing)
I have no problems at all - not that I visit that many sites with java
I think the version is OK but possibly Firefox is not
Empty the Firefox cache and see if it makes any difference

Same problem here with java, a good test was addthis.com and it always crashes, every time. :-(

I'm pretty sure it hates me. :\

Any ideas?

No problems - but I also have NoScript so I allow the domains one by one - don't know if that makes any difference

I tested that link. It appears to function normally for my system (Mint 7 x64 stock install as per signature). The only Firefox add-on I have is AdBlock Plus. I just wanted to share in case it might help narrow down the problem.

I ran from the terminal and this is all I got.

mmcrae@mmcrae-desktop ~ $ firefox
Xlib: extension "RANDR" missing on display ":0.0".
Illegal instruction
mmcrae@mmcrae-desktop ~ $

Any ideas on how I can get more info? It just says illegal instruction when I visit a such such as addthis.com

Tried uninstalling firefox (and related firefox stuff) and reinstalling. That was also a no go, though I do have a question.

How many people having this crash issue are running dual displays?

seems to be fixed by unchecking xinerama under nvidia-settings and verifying the configuration. I will post any changes, but so far so good. :-)

Almost forgot to update my post again, it still happens randomly. However I am still using the nvidia dual screen stuff. I have another system at home with no problems at all on a single screen setup, fresh install also. So I am definitely thinking something to due with nvidia dual screen.

Just wanted to keep you all updated: I managed to fix this bug by uninstalling everything java-related in Synaptic, restarting, re-installing Java, and restarting again. Haven't had an issue since. Thanks for your input, everyone.
