I wanted to know this too, so, after a forum search I found this:-

http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=20306&p=120309&hilit=program+associations#p120309

I used the first method, the second method is too vague (insufficient options), and it works. I've only associated it with .avi files at the moment.
I'll have to repeat this for any other file types (.mpg etc) that I want to associate (integrate) with VLC.

This unfortunately is a bug in the jaunty packages of vlc (due to the stubbornness of both Ubuntu and the vlc developers it wont get fixed until the next release...) although you can fix it by doing the following:

go to the terminal and type (or copy&paste)

Code: Select all
sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

and then add the following lines to the very bottom of the file and save and exit:
Code: Select all
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kow/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/kow/ppa/ubuntu jaunty main

then type this into the terminal
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update

after that you should see in the bottom right of the screen in the system tray that you have updates :D

Hope that helps!

PS: I like watching bleach as well
