You (user) are included in the fuse group
--does it work under root access (# prompt)
permissions on /mnt/gmail, or wherever you created the mountpoint

You can run mint menu>control center>system>Users & Groups..Manage Groups TAB>Properties
--see if you are in the fuse group, or select your user and look through its settings to see which groups your are in..
[x] if it is not ticked when you see your name, you are not in that group
--compare it with the console command groups, which will give you a direct indicator of groups yo are allocated/assigned to..

I prefer this method, it is quicker and a more definitive indicator..

Mint menu>control center>system>users & groups>Unlock button,

• reply with your user password,
  --you should be in the admin group to do so
• manage groups>Fuse
• check that root and yourself (you logged in username) are ticked [x] to be included in the fuse group..

As a test, run min menu>Software Manager or Package Manager, are you given a dialog screen that asks for a password ??
--if you are that is the admin function password being required to perform that task, same as with the above control center operations

Or in the Terminal
mint menu>Terminal, is located in favorites
sudo su
--are you asked for your password ??

If the above works, you get password prompts; then back to gmfs install & configurations
