Beryl Problem

Postby btm on Tue Jun 05, 2007 7:39 am

Hi,

Just installed Mint on my work laptop and loving it.

I work in IT administration and so need to work with windows machines all the time, but want my one to be linux. To get around any problems this causes I've been using linux on my laptop and rdp-ing to my desktop (running windows server2003) and leaving that rdp session running on one side of the beryl cube.

I quick spin of the mouse and I'm in windows... perfect.

I've found, when I tested before with Ubuntu, that beryl doesnt like rdp in fullscreen mode. Crashes when you try to spin the cube with ctrl-alt-mousewheel.

So I just use it windowed.

But I said I'd test it again in Mint, just in case it worked. Crashed again... no big deal, or so I thought.

Now that I've restarted beryl it wont change desktops. Not even by clicking on the workspace in the panel. I've no idea why.

I've restarted X, restarted the PC, reinstalled beryl. Still the same.

I really dont want to have to re-install Mint but it wouldnt be the end of the world if I had to.

Does anyone here know another way I might try to fix it?

Thanks

Brian

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

Check your Beryl setting, e.g. in the Beryl-Settings Manager. Also: Sometimes Beryl crashes and you are returned into your standard "2D" GUI environment. In that case you can click on the Beryl icon (a red diamond) and choose "Select Window Manager => Beryl" to get Beryl started again.

I assume it's just something harmless like that. Re-Installation would therefore be total "overkill".

No, it's more than that.

It did revert back to metacity but when I change it back the desktops can't change.

I've tried turning off the cube and 3d effects in beryl but it still wont even let me switch workspaces!

before trying any of the following, I would suggest
exporting your current setting in the Beryl Manager Settings

If you have not installed it, try installing Beryl-Manager Settings (Simple)
using the slider adds/removes several settings that might resolve your problem

but if that fails, or you wish to try Beryl .3.0+git svn
i posted a script in the how tos here in the mint forums
http://www.linuxmint.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2861
only known issue file path line to launch it
## sudo sh /home/yourLoginID/beryl3er
should read
## sudo sh /home/yourLoginID/Desktop/beryl3er

I feel stupid now.

It was just something stupid.

Loaded settings manager simple but that didnt change it.

Went back into settings manager and finally noticed that "rotate cube" was unchecked. I guess when thats not on but the cube is activated you cant change desktop at all.

Thanks for your help
