x86 64 vs i386

Postby geoffm on Thu Jul 23, 2009 12:30 pm

I want to download Opera 10 beta2
http://www.opera.com/download/?custom=yes

If I choose for linux i386, I only get to choose package for ubuntu 7.10
If I choose for linux x86 64, then I can choose a package for ubuntu 9.04

I don't think I have the 64bit linux version installed (I run Gloria), would it be bad that I install the x86 64 opera package?

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

geoffm;

If you are using Mint 7 Main Edition, it is a 32 bit OS. The 64 bit version is labelled "Mint 7 Gloria x64".

The 64 bit version of Opera 10 will not run on a 32 bit OS. You will get an error message stating the i386 architecture will not support the version of Opera you are trying to install.

The 32 bit version runs fine in Mint 7 even though the version is labelled for Ubuntu 7.10, so I would recommend downloading it if you have a 32 bit OS.
