BBS Software

Postby milk-jug on Thu Jul 23, 2009 10:55 pm

I may be asking the wrong crowd on this one but here goes.

I'm looking for software for the old BBS style forum. not the origional BBS with telnet but the era where it was before pbpbb and the origional.

an example of what I'm talking about is below, However, after an email, this was made by a programmer who isn't there anymore.

ok. maybe I didn't say this the right way. Back in the day when you used to dial-up to connect. you used Telnet to connect to them. I'm not talking about that old BBS system. I'm talking about a web based BBS. Now days they call them forums but back in the day they were referd to as BBS. people now days are using PHPBB or YABB. I am looking for a BBS or Forum like the one like this that was in between those eras. These are not fancy and does the basic.

I am trying to find something either like this

or like

http://www.telnetbbsguide.com/faq.asp
    Telnet BBS User's FAQ
    Q. What is a "Telnet" and what is a "Telnet BBS"?
    A. Telnet is one of may Internet protocols and systems. The World Wide Web is only one system. Internet E-mail (POP3 and SMTP), Usenet, FTP (File Transfer Protocol) are other common Internet protocols. Telnet is a method of "logging" onto a remote computer and interfacing with that remote computer via a text interface. If you are familiar with the traditional "dial-up" BBS, this is basically the same thing but using the Internet instead of dialing a BBS with your modem.
I didn't, but I did use dial up software like Telix
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telix
--a very nice terminal program..

I don't think you did, because back in the day, free or commercial BBS used dial up and the software was the BBS interface, not telnet anything

The only people who used Telnet that much were those who wanted a Linux root account..

I did see that link you have about the writers BBS, but it doesn't go anywhere
--the other one is Japanese or Chinese characters

Anyway, BBS on the web still exists..

http://www.telnetbbsguide.com/
The Telnet BBS Guide is the largest active listing of Dial-Up and Telnet accessable Bulletin Board Systems on the Internet! We list a total of 421 BBS and related systems with brief and detailed descriptions and a downloadable text-version listing suitable for listing on your BBS or for as a download for others to view and use.

For that terminal screen (console) look..

Linux terminal clients (bbs etc)

If you wanted to go that far, you might as well run a console based Linux..and load up the bbs server software onto a dedicated machine
