Well, I haven't had any problems.
I installed java using synaptic. It's the sun-java6-jdk package.
This works out of the box, with eclipse, the command line, etc.
If you unzipped the jdk, then
http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/linux-unix ... -variable/
shows you how to set java_home. I'm sure it's available from SUN, too.

Re: Java problems in Linux mint
Woohoo! It works! It works! Thanks for the tip! I re-installed the whole Linux Mint and then installed the latest Java JDK, Java JRE and Java BIN using Synaptic. Now my applications work both when compiled from the command line and when compiled with Geany. I must admit I like Geany, cause it's so simple. Well, maybe I'll give Eclipse a try as well.
Whew, finally. I was determined to get it working under Mint and now it's working. Thank you for everyone for your help. Linux Mint gained a couple of new points in my eyes, cause the online forums have been so helpful. Now I can delve deeper in the Linux world.
Thanks!

BTW... I use NetBeans...(and jEdit and UEx)
And I am now looking at Geany. Thanks for _that_ tip.
