Unable to enable desktop effects

I recently found that compiz/desktop effects had been disabled on my desktop, which may have had something to do with installing PlayonLinux. I tried re-enabling them, but I couldn't. I was running the latest drivers from nvidia at the time, and thought that it may have something to do with that. So I uninstalled the drivers and installed the 180.44 drivers provided by the restricted drivers program in Mint. Yet I still can't enable the effects.

The only major changes recently were installing PlayonLiunx, and subsequently Pharaoh, and upgrading to Kernel 2.6.28-15. The desktop effects were disabled before this, on 2.6.28-13. I upgraded the kernel to see if it would refresh anything out of place. Ideas?

I'm not sure if this will help your situation, but has helped me with something similar . . .
drop out of X, and run sudo nvidia-xconfig
