disable mintMenu comments

Postby huss on Tue Jun 19, 2007 1:51 am

I love the distro, and especially the mintMenu, but the comments that appear on mouseover are annoying. Is there any way to disable them? I've searched through gconf-editor without any result.

Linux Mint is funded by ads and donations.

lars has some info here:
http://linuxmint.com/forum/viewtopic.ph ... enu&t=1302

so it should now work if you have v2.3 of mintmenu.

I have version 2.3, but unfortunately unchecking gconf-editor>>apps/panel/global>>tooltips_enabled didn't work. According to that thread though, it's been taken into consideration, not sure if it's been implemented. That's alright, I can wait for this feature, or try to implement it myself if possible.

One more question though, where can I find the source code for linux mint's apps such as mintMenu and mintInstall? At the bottom of the homepage it says (about non-linux mint packages): "If you want to access their source code you can use the apt-get source command or browse our FTP server." but any attempt at connecting to ftp://ftp.linuxmint.com requires a password, and an attempt at getting the source with apt-get source mintmenu failed.

I ask because I'm a computer science student on summer break with nothing better to do than hack at some code, and if I can help the Linux Mint in the meantime, well than all the better. :D

EDIT: Nevermind, I was able to find the .deb packages and extract them. I wish I knew more python, but I guess this will make for an interesting project. Thanks for your help anyway though.

I managed to disable the tooltips for the application section (which is really all I wanted). Basically all I did was comment out all of the setTooltip calls in applications.py.

Here's the diff for anyone who's interested (version 2.3):
290c290
< self.mintMenuWin.setTooltip( FavButton, FavButton.getTooltip() )
---
> # self.mintMenuWin.setTooltip( FavButton, FavButton.getTooltip() )
458c458
< self.mintMenuWin.setTooltip( CategoryButton, _("Show all applications") )
---
> # self.mintMenuWin.setTooltip( CategoryButton, _("Show all applications") )
481c481
< self.mintMenuWin.setTooltip( CategoryButton, child.get_name() )
---
> # self.mintMenuWin.setTooltip( CategoryButton, child.get_name() )
496c496
< self.mintMenuWin.setTooltip( ItemButton, ItemButton.getTooltip() )
---
> # self.mintMenuWin.setTooltip( ItemButton, ItemButton.getTooltip() )

Next up, implementing this as a configurable gconf setting :)

Can't believe no one has commented. So, this approach must work. Right? Any activity on setting up an automatic way to accomplish this, or should I just tweak the applications.py file?

Thanks for your post...
