desktop effects
hi,
I just put mint 7 on my system and everything works as it should, but im using reccommended nvidia video driver 180 and i restarted the computer. Then I tried to enable desktop effects and it said,(desktop effects could not be enabled.)Why?I used desktop effects in kubuntu 9.04, and 9.10 and it works great! I have a dell demension 2400 2G ram and a Nvidia geforce 8400GS for video. Also I tried to enable the effects in ubuntu and it did the same thing. It must be a gnome enviroment thing.Could someone please help resolve this issue?!?!? I know its not a huge problem but Its really awsome to have. Also how do get rid of certain programs and applications by using a add or remove interface???

Re: desktop effects
Hi, can you post the output of inxi -G and the results of compiz-check (from the terminal).
I have an idea of how to help, but would like to see what your computer sees.

Re: desktop effects
Open the terminal from the menu, then type in what is in BOLD, hit the Enter button. Then use your mouse to highlight the results.
Now, click to your open Web-browser window, then in the reply box, just click your middle mouse button to paste it.

Checking if it's possible to run Compiz on your system...
Checking for texture_from_pixmap... [ OK ]
Checking for non power of two support... [ OK ]
Checking for composite extension... [ OK ]
Checking for FBConfig... [ OK ]
Checking for hardware/setup problems... [WARN]
Something potential problematic has been detected with your setup:
Warning: PCI ID 8086:2562 detected.
Would you like to know more? (Y/n) y
Your particular graphics chip may be blacklisted on certain distributions.
However that does not necessarily mean you will not be able to run Compiz.
You can skip this blacklist -- but keep in mind that you did so.
Do not complain if you encounter any problems with Compiz afterwards.
Do you want to skip blacklist checks by Compiz? (y/N)

Re: desktop effects
When you used the Hardware Drivers application, I bet the 180 drivers were the first on the list, BUT the 185 drivers a little farther down the list were the Recommended drivers . . . you can use the same program to de-activate, and activate the new ones . . . or if you feel really adventurous, you can read the instructions, download, and install the new 190 drivers from here . . . http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_disp ... 90.42.html

Re: desktop effects
If that hasn't helped? You can try this . .
Reboot, and on the initial boot screen (where it is counting down), hit the spacebar, and choose Compatibility Mode, when you get to the new Menu, scroll down to Root Terminal, login, and type nvidia-xconfig (enter), follow the prompts, save, reboot . . .
