finally solved this problem ( after almost two months of no help in this forum )

if anyone is having problems converting or creating files in one of the restricted formats i suggest this solution
just install this extra codecs package and see if it fixes your problems

pick the package that suites your distribution

Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.10
Code:
sudo apt-get install ffmpeg libavcodec-extra-52

Note: The libavcodec-extra-52 package for Karmic does not support AAC or AMR formats. I recommend using libavcodec-extra-52 from the Medibuntu repository.

Ubuntu Jaunty Jackalope 9.04
Code:
sudo apt-get install ffmpeg libavcodec-unstripped-52

Ubuntu Intrepid Ibex 8.10
Code:
sudo apt-get install ffmpeg libavcodec-unstripped-51

this is what solved my winff problems with converting files to mp3 .... really hope this can help someone else

Thank you! :D
I was getting the 'libmp3lame' error after installing WinFF. Went into Synaptic Package Manager, chose libavcodec-unstripped-52 and Synaptic did the removal of the defaults and installed the unrestricted packages. That solved my problem very nicely!

you might want to look at sound converter too. Thats what I use to do that. Just an after thought
