i dont know if this has been posted, or if i am even posting this in the right section, but installing the "software modem" will make you loose your sound, i dont know if it's an every time, everybodys experience type of thing, but ive heard of a few causes of this. so if you lost your sound and are pulling out your hair, trying everything to get it to work... simply uninstall the software modem.
i am talking about "Software Modem" in the Hardware Drivers installer under "administration" in your mint menu

What you wrote makes sense, the two devices are using shared resources.
