Kernel Source

Post by Locuust »

I'm considering compiling my own kernel so I can turn on a few options I need for KVM but I'm wondering if would be best to download the sources from ubuntu using git or grab it off kernel.org. Obviously I could get the latest off kernel.org but if I'm using the ubuntu sources I'm thinking I'd have better luck not breaking anything in mint.

Any input would be appreciated.

Forgot to mention earlier, and you probably know this already, but, be sure to download all 3 deb files for your architecture. And there is a specific order when installing the 3 files, the instructions probably told you which file to install first (all), second (headers), third (kernel) . . just right-click each, one at a time, choose open with GDebi, and follow the prompts . . :)

ps: if you have any ati/nvidia drivers installed, be prepared to download/install/compile the latest drivers for that specific kernel from the respective sites, as the drivers installed through the Hardware Drivers application MAY only work for the original kernel they were installed for . . (may work - recovery mode -> fix X)

Nice!! Thanks very much for sharing that RichyRich!

(Maybe I should open a new thread for this question, but here it goes)
If I'm running Mint 10 based on Maverick, is it OK to run a kernel compiled for Natty? I want to run 2.6.38, but they don't have any listed for Maverick. Thanks again :D
