I've only had a working Beryl once.. once! I want to try the nice good looking themes that Emerald has, but everytime I try to use Beryl as a window manager my screen flicks for a couple of seconds and then I'm back to metacity. Also I've tried a few guides floating around the forums but no luck.

Can anyone please help me get this thing working?
I have a x200 series integrated ATI card with the Envy drivers installed.

The X200 is a low performance chip, and has its fair share of problems because of that...
We need some more information about your computer.
How much memory and is the memory shared or does your x220 have its own memory?
Laptop/desktop and processor too

Device manager shows a lot of "unknowns"

e.g. in the tech specs of your machine? e.g. when you bought it? Can you at least say what brand/make/model your computer is?

You get some info from lspci in a terminal, but not the amount of memory etc.

ATI's proprietary driver won't work with AIGLX +Beryl. You should try XGL+Beryl instead.

Well I don't really mind not getting the 3D effects I just want to use emerald themes. :lol:

heya i got the same sorta prob i mean i had it working once.. and now it doenst

it happened when i used envy to get some new ati drivers abnd now no go.....

here is wat me specs are

AMD athlon 3000+ (pretty sure not 100%)
1Gb DDR Ram
Ati Radeon X850XT (AGP 8x)
Mint 3.0 (cassandra)
on a 80Gb HDD IDE
i also have another 2 80GB drives one being SATA and the other also being IDE
the SATA has jst files (all me media stuff

)
and the other IDE has win XP

anymore i can find out for chas

I tried to search for a solution, but you soon get too many results that are inadequate. I don't think you can use emerald without Beryl or Compiz (you can use some themes in Compiz)

Alright thanks, I looked for some on the Ubuntu forums but I $%#$% my Xorg and I had problems booting.

I guess I'll have to buy a better video card :cry:

If you had Beryl working once it was probably before you used Envy to update the video driver. The proprietary ATI driver does not support composite extensions and will not work with Beryl unless you are running under an XGL session.

You should try going back to the default open-source driver before messing with XGL. There is a very nice guide on setting up Beryl with the open-source driver here:

Follow the steps for setting up the video and xorg.conf file. You don't have to worry about installing Beryl since it is already included in Cassandra.
