Distorted sound from games?

Hi,

I'm finding that the sound from my games (tuxkart, etc) is sounding distorted: there's a kind of stuttering or static-y quality to the music. These are all 3-d games. It's on a 1.73 ghz Intel core duo laptop with Conexant/Intel high definition sound chip set. I've tried selecting different sound system drivers from Sound prefs, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.

Anybody else heard this or know what causes it?

What video chip is it? Amount of memory, both for video and in general.
It could be that the 3D games takes so much of the resources that sound is suffering

It's an intel 945 chipset (integrated, with shared memory, of course) and it has 1 GB of system memory. I wonder if they'd run better if I turn off Beryl? Does that eat a lot of memory?

Beryl used about 40 MB on my desktop. I would turn off Beryl - you don't use it in games I suppose
Otherwise 945 seems to work ok in most cases

I tried turning off Beryl but it makes no difference; those games still give me static and stuttering sound. I'm frustrated and stumped!

A temporary solution could be to put the volume control at 100%
Another workaround could be to change ~.asoundrc to read as follows

There seems to be a bug in sdl-mixer
