Lightscribe working!

I noticed lightscribe was listed a few times within the forum as a "wanted" app. Well, this may not be the best way to do it, but I got the app working, and not the LaCie label system, where you can't seem to add text, I got the "lightscribe simple labeler" working, which is fine for me, since I have better things to do than spend 20 minutes waiting for a disc to be labled.

Here's what I did:


First - I installed Alien and it's dependencies -
Then I downloaded and installed both packages from the LaCie site.
(run as sudo: alien -i "package name"). Please note to install these is a specific order - as instructed on their site.

I then went to the lightscribe site and downloaded the simple labeler -
once again, I used (as sudo) alien -i to install the package. It installs the files in the OPT directory. When I tried to execute the labeler, nothing happened, so I tried it in a terminal, to see what was causing the problem and noticed a missing libpng.so.4 dependency. I went to synaptic, downloaded the missing libraries (including the dev files, as I was not sure what was included in these libraries), then tried the labeler again and wholia! It worked as in the other os.

Burned a music cd, then labeled it and it looks perfect and only took 3 minutes to complete.

I know this is not a show stopper app, but it is a real goodie for me and just shows that, given some digging and research, you can make Linux work for you.

Lastly - Kudos to Clem and company on making what I consider the most useful distribution out right now! Look & Feel are outstanding -

Never saw these, but when unzipped, they appear to be the two files I originally downloaded and while they work - with those files, you can't add text at all, just an image. I tried like crazy to add text within the app (I know one could modify an image using Gimp or any other image editing software), but I could not write anything on the disc.

Other distros include the labeler - so I simply tried to add the labeler and it appears successful.

Regardless - I'm happy that I can now scribe images and text on discs.

Found another source - LaCie has a lightscribe labeler for linux which integrates into K3B as well... rpm's though - just use "alien" to install
