How to interpret filefrag results?

Post by eiver »

First - I really googled a lot for defragmentation and ext3. I also searched these forums. Before I start another huge topic about ext3 fragmentation I just wanted to make sure about one thing:

I executed the command "filefrag" for a 1.4 GB file. (FYI - The file resides on a 32 GB partition on which there is 9 GB free space.)
The results:

Code: Select all

14492 extents found, perfection would be 12 extents
Does this mean that the file has14492 fragments?

...assuming that report is accurate, yes. The file is stored in 14,492 individual pieces on your drive.

Hmmmm. If what you say is true, then I should probably say something like: "Ha! In your face!" to everyone who keeps saying that ext3 defragmentation is not necessary.

Few more results on other files I have:

Code: Select all

1486 extents found, perfection would be 1 extent
1409 extents found, perfection would be 1 extent
866 extents found, perfection would be 1 extent
2147 extents found, perfection would be 1 extent
1751 extents found, perfection would be 1 extent
1388 extents found, perfection would be 1 extent
2490 extents found, perfection would be 2 extents
