How do I get aMSN to allow webcam

Post by xpuser »

Can someone help me to get my webcam to work on aMSN.
The webcam works fineoutside of aMSN, but when I try to connect on aMSN it shows that "you are firewalled or behind a router"

I have my firewall disabled. I have mobile broadband so don't have any router.
I read something about having to do port forwarding, but don't know how this can be done without a router.
Basically all I have to work with is the "Network Connections" under Preferences.
Has anyone successfully used aMSN via a mobile broadband, without any physical router?

If you did control the router..

The first thing you could try is turning off your own firewall, otherwise you are out of luck as you can't change the router's connection settings, to allow you to use amsn on Linux..

In terminal, check
  • ufw --status
    Usage: ufw COMMAND
    Commands:
    enable enables the firewall
    disable disables the firewall

Thank you for the information.
I turned off the firewall so I guess there's no way to get the webcam to connect.
Now, I have to look for an alternate MSN compatible messenger service. I tried emisem, but the webcam doesn't work on that either.

Does your webcam work offline?
Try testing it with the program "Cheese" - it can be found in Package Manager.

I never looked at meebo before, but that was a good suggestion. Do you use it yourself? The drawdown is that my MSN contacts would need to sign in via Meebo to do video chat.

I am always worried about security, and that's the main reason I have just recently switched to Linux (even have the antivirus installed :D , so I am hesitant to use Meebo because I don't like giving away my password to third party IM's. I read that Meebo encrypts passwords when sent over the net, and they don't store passwords unless automatic login is required. Still, not sure how to trust Meebo. Any comments fully appreciated.
