error using update or synaptic //Solved

Postby xmido on Thu Aug 30, 2007 4:59 am

when i click install Software in the main menu or try to update, i get the error message "E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
E: _cache->open() failed, please report."

I opened a terminal and wrote "sudo dpkg --configure -a"

i get the error message "dpkg: parse error, in file `/var/lib/dpkg/updates/0001' near line 1:
newline in field name `#padding'"

i dont really know wat to do.

plz help!

My /var/lib/dpkg/updates is empty - I think your file is a temporary file.
Move the file(s) in there to somewhere else - possibly the desktop and run the command again
If it works out then just delete the files

error while moving

Postby xmido on Thu Aug 30, 2007 3:53 pm

i tried moving them to the desktop, it says"/var/lb/dp...dates/tmp.i" cannot be moved because you do not have permissions to change it or its parent folder/"

skip|cancel|retry

is there a way to get permission to make changes in the folder.

OK - you have to use sudo (in a terminal of course)
Code: Select all
sudo mv /var/lib/dpkg/updates/0001 ~/Desktop

moves (mv) that file to the Desktop (~ is a symbol for /home/your_username)
In KDE there is a simple way to do it in the file browser
