playonlinux and executables

Hey whats up everyone im am fairly new to linux ive tried ubuntu and it seems nice but i want to switch to mint, anyways disregarding that, How do i use executable files on linux? i downloaded playonlinux, but how do i install it? I tried to extract it but it does not turn in to an executable. ive tried on terminal its just that i dont know what to type in terminal in ordser to install playonlinux do i need a wine package? :mrgreen: your feedback is apreciated at the highest caliber

did you download the .DEB file? Mint/Ubuntu/Debian use *.DEB files . Then you install the applications by double-clicking on it in a file browser, or using a terminal and doing something like:

# dpkg -i PlayOnLinux_3.7.6.deb

if you downloaded this file:
http://www.playonlinux.com/script_files ... _3.7.6.deb

Thank you very much paul also, does playonlinux suppoert a good amount of games for linux? :shock:

I'm not familiar with playonlinux. I've used wine a few times, but for the most part I use native linux apps. I've installed Quicken using wine, and IE6, that's about it. There are some really good native linux games, like nexuiz, here's a link to the top 25 games of 2008:

as far as wine goes, you might want to check out the site:
http://www.winehq.org/ and see what it does and DOESn'T do..

to try it, just download the windoes EXE or installer for a specific program, and double-click it. WIne will try to install it if it can.
