migrating my email accounts from TB 2 to TB 3

Post by adityavpratap »

Hi,
I am running Linux Mint 8 on my Acer Aspire 5738z laptop. I had configured thunderbird 2 to access my gmail account and google calendar account. Today I downloaded Thunderbird 3.1.1 from getthunderbird site. I want to know how to migrate my settings from TB2 to TB3. TB3 is installed in /usr/local/ folder.
Thanking in advance,

Have you tried running the Import option?
If you accept - and I do - that freedom of speech is important, then you are going to have to defend the indefensible. That means you are going to be defending the right of people to read, or to write, or to say, what you don't say or like or want said.

Import doesn't seem to work or at least I am unable to get it to work, because, the import screen that comes up when I select Import everything, doesn't show any files that can be imported.

One way is to export your profile from TB2 using this extension
http://softwarebychuck.com/tebe/tebebeta.html

Download it and rename it from *.zip to *.xpi and install it in TB2
To install into TB2 you need to open "Tools/Add-ons"
Select "Extensions" and click on "Install" or drag & drop the xpi into extensions.

Backing up your TB2 profile:
Go to Tools/TEBE/TEBE Options and set
Option tab:
Set to "Full Profile"

Directory tab:
set the "Backup Destination Directory" to your choice and
set "use timestamped directories"

Close the window

click on Tools/TEBE/Perform Backup to backup your profile

Restoring your profile in TB3
You can not restore to an active profile so you must create a new profile to restore to.

Create a desktop icon for TB3 by going to TB3 in the menu, right click
and select "Add this launcher to the desktop"

Right click on the TB3 desktop icon and select properties

Change the Command: from "thunderbird %u" to "thunderbird %u -P"
close the window and double click the icon.
Select "Create Profile"
Under "Enter new profile name:" type in your name instead of "Default user"
click on "Choose Folder", click on "Create Folder", give it your name and click on "Open".

Click "Finish", select the default profile and start thunderbird
Install the *.xpi you downloaded earlier into TB3 and restart TB3

go to Tools/TEBE/Restore/Restore Profile
select your TB2 profile backup
In the "Restore Profile" window select the new profile you just create and click "OK"
Click "OK" on the first window and "close on the second one.

Close TB3 down and double click the TB3 desktop icon
Select the new profile and click on "Start Thunderbird"
You should now be running TB3 using your old profile.

I use FEBE from the same developer to backup my firefox profile into dropbox for access on any machine i'm on.
good luck
