installing .tar.gz files

hi im a noob at linux =]

i was trying to install this countdown timer on my desktop cuz i really need one
http://www.gfiles.org/gtk/download/countdowntimer/392/

and i followed directions.

./configure worked and configured but it gave me a error saying i didnt have permession to make the executable files and then when i did make install it said the same thing.

am i doing something wrong? or is there any other way to install .tar.gz files.

im on bea btw =]

I have just installed the timer, here is how I did it.
I downloaded it to my home folder, clicked on the folder and extracted it, the i did the command <cd countdowntimer-1.0>
(without the chevron signs),at the next prompt i then entered
< ./configure> at the next prompt i entered <make> then at the next prompt i Then entered < sudo make install> Then entered password, and finally at the last prompt i then typed exit.
