Can I use grub 2 and install grub 1?

Post by nolag »

I am following http://www.cs.vu.nl/~herbertb/misc/writingkernels.txt but I am not sure how to do it with grub 2. If you know how I can do this without installing grub 2 as my boot loader?

As far as I am aware, it's one or the other.

More than you ever wanted to know (including how to uninstall grub2 and revert to grub legacy): https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Grub2

I understand how to use grub and grub2, what I want to do is have grub2 installed on my computer and use grub as the boot loader for my os (from http://www.cs.vu.nl/~herbertb/misc/writingkernels.txt):P.

A grub2 bootloader will recognize grub-legacy OS s , but not the other way around.
If you have a mixture of OS s you need to use a grub2 bootloader.

Sorry Stan.... not true.

I have a dedicated GRUB legacy boot partition that I am using as the platform to boot to numerous ops with GRUB2 (Mint 8 & Mint 9). Works fine.
