I understand what this does, not the strategy of what to set it to.
I see in Mint everything, including /, is set to 1 except proc,cdrom,floppy. When I was using PCLOS everything was set to 0. In the man for fstab it says set / to 1 and everything else to 2. What is "normal"?

I believe that most systems have 1 for / and 2 for the rest
With a 0 no check is performed and while that is the default way for Windows it's not so for Linux as far as I know.
