Google Earth, LM9, Gnome: Starburst & Ragged Edges

Post by Resistor »

I'm a Linux newbie, and have found no solutions here, or on googles sites.

I installed from the Synaptics Package Manager, and it seemed flawless.
There are some weird display issues, when running Google Earth,
I disabled the splash image, but that did not help.

There is a star burst of straight lines, radiating from the middle.
The outer edges have a rough and jagged appearance that seems to crop the image, for lack of a better description.

All the correct software seems to be installed.

I believe I'm running the ATI drivers, but can't recall where I found that properties screen. Google Earth runs fine on windows vista, on the windows partition.

I have marked for installation, but waiting to apply:

fglrx - Video driver for the ATI graphics accelerators
This package provides 2D display drivers and hardware accelerated OpenGL.
fglrx-amdcccle - Catalyst Control Center for the ATI graphics accelerators

There are other fglrx entries installed, but I do not know the differences.

This is on a Dell Inspiron 1521
Video Display Card - ATI Radeon x1270
CPU Name: AMD Turion(tm) 64 X2 Mobile Technology TL-58 - 32 bit
CPU Speed: 1900MHz
Total Memory: 2048MB
1024MB 667MHz
1024MB 667MHz
ACPI x86-based PC

On a side note:
Does anybody know how to tame Dell's cursor?
I found a fix on an older model, about 7 or 8 years ago, but memory fails...

I have the exact Dell 1521 as you do. I ran Julia off of the live cd without any problems and then installed Julia as the sole OS. Once installed I was able to get to the logon screen and once I logged in it just froze with a black screen. I then Ctrl+Alt-Backspace and tried it twice more with no success. I did however login in safe mode and it seemed to be fine. I reinstalled Julia a second time with the same results. This is the last pc left to completely switch over to Mint, and it's been the only problem pc I have had. Overall positive experience except for this Dell 1521. Hope someone can provide a solution. Thanks.
