Update replaced new with old version
I use Mint-9. Something strange happened this week. I use Picasa for my photographs. I have been using version 3.8 for some time. The channel version is the obsolete version 3.0. I have had several update come this week and one, Monday, I think, replaced my version 3.8 with the older, in channel, version 3.0. Quite irritating as I had to go to the effort of reinstalling version 3.8. I have never previously had update replace a newer version with an older version! Any idea why?

Re: Update replaced new with old version
If you use the update manager, all available updates / changes are preselected, if you select install updates without de-selecting the ones you don't want, the system automatically replaces your installed version with the one in the repository.
I use Chromium but a more recent version than the one from the repo so I need to check it is not in updates before proceeding or risk it being downgraded

Re: Update replaced new with old version
I tend to do as Ian does and check each package before installing.
But since you are using Picasa 3.8 you must have installed it from either a .deb file or by compiling. If you had installed from a PPA, I am thinking that It would have tracked with your 3.8 version. If you compiled from source you may be able to get it to track your version and not revert by installing checkinstall beforehand.

In Synaptic look at > Preferences > Distribution there is an option for package upgrade behavior to Always prefer the installed version but this is for the default distribution, so it may not help with an add on application like Picasa. (and Synaptic is not usually used for across the updates)CheckInstall keeps track of all the files created or
modified by your installation script ("make install"
"make install_modules", "setup", etc), builds a
standard binary package and installs it in your
system giving you the ability to uninstall it with your
distribution's standard package management utilities.
Re: Update replaced new with old version
Thank you for the feedback. I'll just carefully check future updates for picasa. Picasa 3.8 is installed per the procedure at Google-Labs-Picasa-for-Linux ( http://goo.gl/0uT62 ). This simply copies Picasa 3.8 over the 3.0 package install. Consequentially, my OS thinks that I still have the channel's version installed. The version 3.0 in the channel is very out of date. Version 3.8 has some very powerful features.
Re: Update replaced new with old version
Hi!
I tried to install from channel the picasa and it just doesnt start, only pops up shortly the welcome screen of picasa.
Then I uninstalled again.
What would be the best way to install it over the shell, which might be quite more accurate version because dependencies??
I am on linux mint debian.
Bye.
