SHUTTER - news, tips, updates...

Post by Elisa »

I am sure most of you will agree with me that the app Shutter is really cool :D

If you wanna be updated with the latest one Shutter version, add these repo sources to your repositories.
From the page: https://launchpad.net/~shutter/+archive/ppa
add your ppa to
/etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/shutter/ppa/ubuntu lucid main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/shutter/ppa/ubuntu lucid main

or

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/shutter/ppa/ubuntu maverick main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/shutter/ppa/ubuntu maverick main

depending on your version but there are nice instructions on that page, just choose your own...

If having any problems, just ask

P.S. If someone is skilled in shutter yet I have a question: I still don't know how to add to Shutter some more URLs for export images to other locations than those 2 - imagebanana.com and imageshack.us . Any tips? :)

I thought you were the shuttermaster?
the banana and the other one lives in:
~/.shutter/accounts.xml

Maybe you just can add a line in there?

EDIT: Nope, just adding a line in accounts.xml didn't seem to help... :?:

Yep, I did tried it too but after some seconds of opening shutter, shutter closed
:) So, probably to address the Shutter crew might help :|

Yeah, I edited in a link above. The hosts all seem to do, whatever they do, in different ways (surprise...), so every site
needs to be coded seperately. It doesn't really sound to hard to me, compared to the rest of the functions in shutter.

If you know some perl you just have to edit /usr/bin/shutter
It doesn't look all nightmarish but then again... which nightmare does before you walk into it?
Happy hacking!

If you wanna be updated with the latest one Shutter version, add these repo sources to your repositories.
From the page: https://launchpad.net/~shutter/+archive/ppa
add your ppa to
/etc/apt/sources.list

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/shutter/ppa/ubuntu lucid main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/shutter/ppa/ubuntu lucid main

deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/shutter/ppa/ubuntu maverick main

depending on your version but there are nice instructions on that page, just choose your own...
Alert for newbies; Do NOT do this of course if you are running LMDE. Using Ubuntu based PPA's on a Debian based system is usually a pretty good recipe for borking your system. Ubuntu Mint and Debian Mint are VERY different and should not be mixed! Just thought it should be mentioned.

/small rant/
Welcome to the Microsoft version of Linux!! Ubuntu seems to be pushing this PPA solution more and more. Pretty soon you will need a 4 page sources.list to be able to get all the software you require. What a perfect way for some slimeball to code some serious malware, bundle it up on an old Pentium II in the backwoods of Siberia and convince the world it is a new super-duper piece of Ubuntu software on a trusted PPA. Every man & his dog downloads it and installs using 'sudo' so off it goes around the critical areas of their system. Another reason to run a mile from Ubuntu?

You may call it fanciful but mark my words, Windows security problems primarily emanate from unverified 3rd party software being allowed on users systems. One of Linux's great strengths has always been the repos are controlled by the distribution developers. You have been warned!! :)
/end rant/

I am not casting aspersions on this particular arrangement either, just flagging a worrying thought.

1st: I'd like to ask - why so laaaarge "preface" before your post?

2nd: u r right to be serious to add new ppa-a but if u r adding ppa-s from authors of a well-known and cool and useful app, with good echoes, reputation...
Also if your system would get down anyway for any reason, it's no problem even in terminal (if you won't be able to log-in to X) to uninstall whatever you installed before...
So here - the comparison Ubuntu/Debian with m$ win... is a bit faar away from a reality, IMHO...

Sorry about that, I didn't realize my mouse had slipped until after I posted!

I agree, but, you are then spreading your security reliance to include the "reputation" of who knows how many potential hacking points for exploitation. I am uncomfortable with that.

Crashes don't worry me so much as malware that uses your machine for purposes that you are unaware of. Well, neither worry me much at the moment; this is Linux after all! :) It is the slippery slope towards more and more Windows type functionality that Ubuntu seems to be on that is my worry with it.
So here - the comparison Ubuntu/Debian with m$ win... is a bit faar away from a reality, IMHO..
Possibly so, I just like my computing simple & solid - and Ubuntu is no longer my choice for that. Hence my shift to LMDE; which brings me back to where I came in. My post was about just flagging that LMDE users should not follow your advice, my rant was only because I was 'in a mood'!! :) Sorry if I diverted the conversation unnecessarily.

cheers,
rhodry.

I agree about ppa, you really don't know who is providing them
--you can only depend on any reports that may come back about problems. I am guessing that if anyone has a real problem, and their system gets fried ala windows virus/malware, that a quick email to Ubuntu will help resolve it, or in launchpad

Ok, maybe not
--they are always busy

Nevertheless ppa providers are solving problems for some users
--if you don't have a problem or are not straying far from the distribution selections, then you are unlikely to even need a ppa solution, but if you are and do need one, you have to take the risk or live with the problem, unless you can code the fix yourself..

But with this policy, always and everywhere, you wouldn't have even in Mint or Ubuntu some cool apps as well as no smart tech-geek would get a chance to show what s/he can do...
That's why there are many places on the net, where you can get info about this or that app or even make research of it by yourself...

And as window$ when u mentioned about it, there are also hackers forums as well as some reverse-engineering groups or other ways how to get the info of any win sw...

Shutter (bad) news:

Shutter must be updated (the author must do the changes) because the free upload service imageshack.us just has changed their policy :x

When u upload a pic you won't get the direct link anymore if you're not registered. It's been changed a day or two ago
And current Shutter doesn't count with this so the whole operation of uploading the images always fail :-(

You can create screens but then you must save them to disc and upload those images manually in your browser... :|
