Reading iTunes library in Linux

Post by aEx155 »

Hey all, another newbie trying to figure out how to use linux better.

I currently have a dual-boot setup with WinVista and LM10. I really like how fast LM is on my computer, despite the compatibility problems with some programs. There are only a few things I can't do in Linux that I use Windows for, but since that isn't very often I don't mind.

I have a fair amount of music stored in an iTunes library on the Windows partition of my drive that I would like to use in Linux with either Rhythmbox or Songbird. My situation is a bit different that most as I'm not really interested in getting full support of my iPod: I just want to be able to access the library within Linux.

I know Songbird has a utility for importing an iTunes library, but the fact that the library is on a different partition makes things difficult as all of the file locations within the library .xml file aren't the same. Through experimentation I did manage to figure out the correct filepath and I replaced all of them within the .xml file but then the playlists wouldn't transfer over.

Can someone [link to] help with:

- a reliable way of mounting my WinVista partition so the file path remains the same?
- some kind of script that takes an .xml file, replaces text strings within it, then saves the modified file (for use with songbird)? OR
- getting the library to just work with Rythmbox/Songbird a different way?

Mint will read a NTFS partition just fine. I don't understand the problem, just import the music files in question into your choice of music players. Why are you messing with the iTunes database file?
