Alternate kernel?

Post by guns90 »

Hello everyone. I was reading a review on another distro when I came across a post that someone stated that he had switched to an alternate kernel (2.6.32) on his laptop because it has an AMD 64 bit processor that the kernel was optimised for. I have no idea how/why/or if this would work, so my questions are:

Is the 2.6.32 kernel more optimised for my AMD Athlon 64 X 2 6400+ than the 2.6.38.2 that comes in Mint 10 and would it improve my speed?

Would there be any trade-off by me giving up the default kernel 2.6.38.2?

Thanks

2.6.32 is the kernel used by Mint Debian, it is not used on Mint 10 (it was used by Mint 9). You should keep 2.6.38 where it is, 38 is faster than 32 because it contains 'the patch that does wonders'.
If you have installed the 64-bit version of Linux Mint, you are already having the correct kernel for your system. If you installed 32-bit, you can install 64-bit on top of it (note that you need a backup, as the files from the Mint partition are deleted).
