Hello,
I am having issues with Linux Mint 10. Last night I ran update manager and updated everything it showed. After the update everything was fine, however, when I started my laptop up this morning, it failed to load both the taskbar and the desktop icons. I can fix this temporarily by doing 'alt+f1' to load the menu and by changing the resolution to something random, and then back to the default. This seems to show the taskbar, however, the desktop icons will still be missing...
Also, this problem seems to be at random. Maybe 1 in 20 reboots I will be able to get it to load normally. And maybe 1 in 5 reboots it will load the desktop icons and not the panel. Most of the time when I reboot both are missing.
Please help, this is very annoying and I want to refrain from reinstalling if I have to. I am not 'program' savvy but with instructions I know my way around the computer
Thanks for any help!!!!!!

Open update manager and check your update history for suspicious looking packages you downloaded and installed perhaps ? It's under the view tab, called history of updates. Look for recent updates that may look like poss culprits. Hint: Esp any rated 3's and 4's. You can uninstall these via synaptic where necessary.
Sure there's plenty of other, no doubt better ways to go about this. But am a mint newb meself and don't feel like thinking or digging around for em. Though summin tells me if this doesn't work. The answer to your problem is probably easily found via the forum search bar.
See if these gnome keyboard shortcuts help ya all out at all.

You can also set the update manager not to show packages marked 3 and 4's < Esp these ... in update managers edit tab, under preferences. Good luck ... sheesh I need to get some stuff done tonight and stop screwing around in these gd forums.

Re: Missing Taskbar & Icons - HELP!
I had a similar problem after installing gnusound.
I found the solution here

The same solution can be found in this forum at
http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.p ... ng#p389262
I also uninstalled gnusound but did not uninstall all the dependencies.
I am running release 10 (Julia)
