Why are all VMs freezing ? :( S.O.S

Post by linuxnoob92 »

hi mints! (catchy eh? :P) well, heres my problem, and a dreadful one at that.
whichever vm (Virtualbox oc, virtual box oracle, vmware, qemu) i run, they all freeze my host (linux mint julia) on startup. yes, ALL 3 OF THEM.(although vmware runs, but it also freezez once i mount the iso) I know this is not a hardwre problem since they all worked PERFECT under windows. My specs are:

Intel Pentium D E6300
2gb ram
Asus p5bmx wifi ap board
usb mouse and kb
2 ide hard drives
no optical drive
his radeon hd5670 1024mb.

Please help :(

This is not my area of experience but it almost sounds like you are allocating too much memory to the virtual machine.

Your total physical memory is 2GB. How much are you giving to the virtual machine?

Is that happening with Intel® Virtualization Technology (VT-x) on or off?

i cant see an option for changing that in the bios. theres something called "Vanderpool Technology" that i see in processor options, but i cant change it. Its value is set to "Enabled".

I think nunol is referring to the setting within the Virtual Machine itself:

Settings > System > Acceleration > Enable VT-x/AMD-V

Try to run a VM from the live Mint DVD if it doesn't crash it could be a problem with your Mint installation.

I got linux mint julia to run on vmware workstation 7 after enabling binary translation with acceleration. The host is still freezing on windows 7 ultimate x64 though. Could it be due to a corrupt iso? ill try installing a windows 7 iso and let you know. Thanx for all your help, sir. :)

hmmm. i successfully installed and ran windows xp pro sp3. the tiny version. It works perfect, and does what i wanted to do with a vm, but it keeps goint unresponsive for a while and then runs normally again, this cycle continues indefinitely.  any ideas regarding this? else, i consider my problem solved. cuz all i needed was to run total video converter to convert videos for my nokia 6300 ;)

If all you need is to convert videos to your Nokia 6300 why do you need a VM?

Linux Mint 10 with arista transcoder or Handbrake should convert the video to your Nokia with subtitles if you need. I have a Nokia N70 and a Nokia E71 and have no problem converting videos from DVD, youtube, etc to the Nokia phone.
