unresponsive and slow laptop

In these day i feel that my laptoop is less responsive then it should be, many times when i am loading a webpage is feels very slow (i have 50/5 Mbit/s wireless internet), when clicking on x (closing) it also feels a little bit slow and transfering files from my backup hard drive is terrible beause, i drag som files over, it starts with a litte delay but when trying to transfer more files (2 transfers like the first one music and the second pictures at the same time) then the delay offen gets higher the second time befor it starts transfering and offen it freezes, it accually many times stops transfering and then i have to start all over again.

Using windows 7 to transfer files from the same backup harddrive with the same laptoop,(never dual boote) it starts transfering files with no delay every time and it dosn't freeze nearly as offen as it does with mint 11 64 bit !

Is there anything i can do about my some times unresponsive and slow laptoop ? (p8400 cpu 4 gb ram, Nvidia Geforce 9650 m GT and 500gb 7200 rpm hard drive)

From the sound of it, you might have some process running in background, doing something....

In that case, can you:
1. Open a Terminal
2. type top
3. Press Enter
4. Highlight & copy
5. paste here
