No US Servers in Package Manger

Post by bryanc1968 »

Why are there not any US Servers listed in the Repositories List for the Package Manger...? When I do the test for the best server to use I always get one from Canada because there are non listed for the US...

Here is the current Mirror/Server list for LinuxMint > http://www.linuxmint.com/edition.php?id=81

Select the server 'closest' to you from this list.

Perhaps, for your US location, the best server is from Canada?

I am located, in the US SouthWest, (northern New Mexico) ... and my best server constantly comes up as 'ca' (Canada)

I use what works best. Closest, or American, is not necessarily best,

I'm talking about the Synaptic Package Manager... When I go to the Settings Menu --> Repositories --> then down where it says Download From: Main Server or Other... I click on Other and it brings up a list of servers... Non of which are in the US... If I click on the Button to find the best server it will pick a server from Canada... But why aren't there any US Servers listed to choose from.. When I can Download the CD/DVD .ISO from 5 different US mirrors...? Are there not any US Repositories for the Synaptic Package Manager...?

I just read on the Linux Mint Blog about new partnership with AYKsolutions, and the new server located in Denver, USA hosting the Linux Mint repositories... Is there a way to add that server to the package manager? It doesn't show up in the repository list..

Is the Package Manager not and Application...? No I am not having a problem... Other than maybe the updates download a little slower from the main repository half way around the world... Yes when I click on the button to find the best repository to download from it picks one of the Canadian Servers... But then again... there are no closer US servers in the list for it to test... So therefore we don't know if maybe a closer US server might get better results or not... That is why I would like to know if there is a way to add the Denver US server or if there are any other US Servers that can be added to the list to see if they perform better than one in another country...

Here are links to the full lists of Linux servers for both Ubuntu and Debian (worldwide)

Depending on which LinuxMint version you use ... Ubuntu-based or Debian-based.

Remember that while Ubuntu is based on Debian ... they are not compatible nor interchangeable.

LinuxMint (main) [Ubuntu-based] > https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+cdmirrors
LMDE [Debian-based] > http://www.debian.org/mirror/list

Try which ever works for your Mint-distro and see how it goes, from there.

I see a mirror/server for Univ. of Colo (Boulder) but nothing for Denver proper. Maybe, you'll have better luck.

Those appear to be mirrors to download the ISO images of the Distro... Not the repositories for the package manager where you get your updates and install applications from...

Not in US, but to get the package manager pointed to my local repo (which is a mirror of my ISP, so much quicker for me, and all quota-free), I manually edited the /etc/apt/sources.list file to change the Ubuntu mirrors it was pointed at. Results below.

deb http://packages.linuxmint.com/ julia main upstream import
deb http://ftp.iinet.net.au/pub/ubuntu/ maverick main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://ftp.iinet.net.au/pub/ubuntu/ maverick-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://ftp.iinet.net.au/pub/ubuntu/ maverick-security main restricted universe multiverse
deb http://archive.canonical.com/ubuntu/ maverick partner
deb http://packages.medibuntu.org/ maverick free non-free

# deb http://archive.removed/ubuntu maverick-removed apps
# deb http://archive.removed/ubuntu maverick-removed games
