This largely depends on what spec machine you are running and what OS.
If you add some more details it will be easier to ascertain if you have a problem or whether your machine can be optimised at all.

Just so you know, Fandangio wasn't talking to himself. The post he replied to was deleted for spamming.

I did wonder what happened to that post!

Though talking to myself is something that I'm doing with alarming regularity these days

On that topic on speeding up your system I found that 'prelinking' sped up my system by a huge amount and best of all its available in the repos and only required minimal editing.

1. Goto Software Center and download prelink
2. Now enable it by typing the below into the terminal

Code: Select all
gksu gedit /etc/default/prelink

Once gedit is open change the line that reads PRELINKING=unknown to PRELINKING=yes then save and exit

3. Now allow prelink to scan your computer by typing the below into terminal

Code: Select all
sudo prelink -a

Don't worry about all the errors that appear, this process may take some time ~5ish minutes

4. Enjoy Instant Application opening times and generally a huge difference in responsiveness.

Worked a treat for me on LM10
Intel Core i7 950 @ 4Ghz
8GB DDR3 Performance RAM
64GB Primary SSD Drive / 2TB Additional SATA2 Storage
nVidia GTX470
Ubuntu 10.10 / Linux Mint 10 / Windows 7 Ultimate

Thanks for the tip terrykiwi83. I'll have to give prelink a try.

I use prelink with preload, still seem to have ample RAM rarely use 1/2 of me 2gbs of RAM even when burning video DVDs and extremely rare to use the swap file.

lol ... Fandangio, don't worry about it. You're not alone ... Some of the best conversations I've ever had have been with myself. :D

OP ... I find that if you open the case and pour a big bag of methamphetamines into your computer. Your system will blaze. Don't do it too often though. Otherwise your computer will start stealing money out of your wallet while ya sleep and hanging out with lowlifes n stuff. Which is really bad news.

Well........ for my system it was to disable update-apt-xapi

sudo chmod 644 /etc/cron.weekly/apt-xapian-index

That disables the sucker without any detrimental effects to my machine and the synaptic package manager works fine. That thing was literally stopping my desktop as if the system was frozen-- P4 2.4 Ghz. Not that my system is any speed demon, but that program running every day meant that my cpu was pegged and I couldn't do a thing until it completed. When I started the package manager it was almost as if the machine had locked (reminded me of YAST, which is why I never liked SuSe). I blamed Mint 12, but running top showed that this thing was using 90%+ of my cpu. Once I disabled it Mint 12 is pretty snappy running Cairo with effects. The only thing I need to remember to do is run "sudo apt update" once in a while.
