[SOLVED] Mozilla Firefox 4-5 keeps crashing

Post by Lilarcor »

Hi,

I'm long time Firefox user. I never had a problem wih FF4 and Linux Mint 10 x64. Ever since I made a clean install of Linux Mint 11 x64, FF4 keeps crashing. I tried everything from flashaid, disabling all add-ons, uninstall all flash plugins, even disabling hardware acceleration on FF. Still crashing.

I just upgraded to FF5 with the ppa http://ppa.launchpad.net/mozillateam/fi ... ext/ubuntu . Same problem.

Crashes occur evertime I watch a video on youtube or... I visit any history pages on htt://tvtropes.org... Seriously. In fact, even with the all flash plugins removed, the youtube video pages still crash. The only time it wouldn't crash on youtube is if I watch the video inside a channel. Once I watch the video page with the comments, it will crash.

No problem with FF4 on WinXP however. I'm down on my luck. Anyone can help me?

Thank you.

first thing that I would check would be in /home/user/.mozolla/firefox look at profile.ini and see if it is indeed pointing to you. if it all looks good then delete the .ini, let it recreate it on it own next time you launch it. then copy contents of your in to it or just just change so it point to yours. Give it a try.

Create a new profile and try that.

Code: Select all

firefox --ProfileManager

The funny thing is that I have same problem. I even installed Chrome. It was okay, and then Chrome started to crash as well..
Reboot helps. (Logging off -- not).

great tip, thanks! That link leads to a couple other great tutorials also, specific to Firefox 5 that was just officially released.

I will give it a shot real soon, and I do hope it will clean up the "enhancements" (Google search) from other sources.

Well it worked! I tried linuxdad's advice and deleted my FF profile. No more crashes, at least until this: I added all my addons back and there was one I never saw before:

Ubuntu Firefox modifications 0.9.1

I seem to have installed itself by default, because I never saw it before and it wasn't there when I first installed LM Katya 11. I disabled it. Surprise  without this, FF will crash just as I described in my 1st post. So I renabled it back and everything is back to normal.

According to a few searches on the net, "it enables Firefox addons to be installed through the package manager." I'll be leaving this on for now. I'm glad to use FF again and version 5! Woohoo!

Thank you everyone for posting.

I just did the normal update back upto 5 and it would not come up. I deleted the profile.ini let it recreate it then edited it to point to my dad.default and all is well.
