Firefox-4.0 was released a few short months ago and already Firefox-5.0 is next, with Firefox-6.0 due for release in Sept.2011, with Firefox-7.0 hot on it's heels.

**Firefox-5.0 was just released as 'stable' by Mozilla (yesterday) ... and has already hit the repros.

And me, always wanting to be on the 'cutting edge' of Open Source ... I have just installed Firefox-6.0 Aurora A2 from the Launchpad.net/mozilla PPA's. (remember PPA's work with Ubuntu-based distros and do not work with Debian/LMDE)

Firefox-6.0 Aurora is to be released in Sept. 2011 ... and, is now available for testing and bug-reporting purposes.

Along with my Daily Updates, the Launchpad PPA for "Mozilla/Firefox-next" just updated my browser to version 7.0a2

I don't think it would have done that, unless Firefox-6.0 was released as 'stable'
FF-6 was due for 'stable' release July 2011. With FF-7.0 due in Sept. 2011 . . . and Firefox-8.0 not far behind.

Of course, now none of my Add-ons or extensions for Mozilla are working with FF-7.0 yet.
But, Firefox-7.0a2 does seem to be noticeably faster than FF-6.0 was, at least for me.

The official Mozilla website doesn't say anything about this, as it will download FF-5.0
But, the Mozillazine (Firefox) Forums are talking about FF-6.0-Beta being released to the public.

Yes, Aurora is now 7.0a, i.e Firefox 7 Alpha, and Nightly (you can try/use it also if you are brave enough) is the future Firefox 8... A Beta of Firefox 6 is released. But I don't see the need for Aurora packages. You just need to download it from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/channel/, extract it somewhere in your /home and click on the file named "firefox" which is inside the folder created during decompression. You can make a shortcut on your desktop, in your menu or your panel if you want/like. Aurora updates itself automatically, if you check this option in the Preferences, or by hand with a click on "Look for updates" in the window "About Aurora" in the Help menu. There is an update every day. And Aurora will find and use your current Firefox profile in your system, in your /home. Really, a distribution package, whatever the distrib, a PPA or other is absolutely useless...

Firefox-Aurora versions 6.0 - 7.0 - 8.0 . . . and beyond

As the new versions of Firefox Aurora are coming at us so fast.

I'd been using firefox 5 for some time and decided i'd give 7 a try.. I now have Aurora installed on my computer via the PPA.. Problem is it won't start (just hangs at start then) and I am unable to remove it.. I tried uninstalling from the software manager, synaptic and the command line. I removed the Aurora PPA and replaced it with the firefox PPA. All attempts to remove start and finish the same way.. Firefox 7XXXX will be removed and songbird installed. Doesn't happen, I'm stuck with firefox 7. In synaptic I select to completely remove firefox and nothing happens. From command line, I'm told firefox is not installed but the brown aurora icon is there and will not work.

ian59, don't use the PPA, it's absolutely useless. Follow what I said in my last post, it's simple and no install to do.

And if I'm not mistaken, removing Aurora is then simply a matter of deleting the containing folder.

Exactly. When you do not want to use Aurora and you want to delete it, you just have to delete the folder that the archive created during decompression in your /home, and the archive itself. Oh and it's the same, the same procedure, to use and remove Nightly, if you're brave enough to try/use it, but to download it, it's here: http://nightly.mozilla.org/ Currently, Nightly is 8.0a1 and you have it just in English. At the contrary, Aurora can be downloading in all languages.

So far no issues with nightly, of course you have to suppress the compat check for extensions.

Firefox 6 is now available in Mint 11 via the updates

My LMDE 'incoming' mint-debian-update App - upgraded my browser to Firefox-8.0a2 (with all needed dependancies).

I do not, have the "nightly-build" but, the debian/mozilla firefox-aurora-next repros added to my sources.list

I'll keep everyone informed as to how this new version of Firefox-8.0 works . . .

Ever since I upgraded to Firefox 6 in my LM9 it occasionally will not terminate firefox-bin when I exit the program. The next time I try to start firefox it gives an error message that says "firefox-bin is still running" and will not allow firefox to start until I manually kill the process. Why is this happening? Any ideas?

lwrver: Agreed. Ever since I loaded Firefox 6, also on LM9, I have trouble getting it to terminate. (I've become really friendly with "system monitor".)

I'm toying with downgrading to Firefox 5 but I haven't found it yet. If FF6 sucks, I wonder if FF7 will suck more. May be time to look for another browser...

I've found the best way to recover from a failure to terminate is to open a terminal window and issue the command "killall firefox-bin". Think I'll open a support request on the mozilla site.

Well, it's Firefox. I have had this "problem" in any Firefox versions... from time to time. If this was the only "problem" with Firefox we would happy.

You have no need for a terminal for exiting the process. Just open your process monitor, depending on the desktop used it can have a different name, and right-click on the Firefox process then choose kill. Done.

The easiest way, to upgrade your install of Firefox, to the current 'stable' release ... is to go to the Launchpad.net site and add the Mozilla/Firefox repros to your sources.list.

To add add/modify/change your sources.list, go here: sudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list

Then:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install firefox

*Also, whenever Mozilla releases a new stable release of Firefox - the 'stable' repros will upgrade the browser - automatically.
