Mouse thumb buttons not working in Firefox

I'm using Mint 11 (ubuntu) and I can't get my thumb buttons (4 and 5) to work in Firefox. In windows they would act like the back/forward buttons. I've done a fair bit of googling but everything I find is 2+ years old or is related to horizontal scrolling. My mouse is in lefthanded mode also but that has never mattered to me before.

Have you checked the Package Manager for any apps that may help ?
