SOLVED: gnome-terminal, totem - bus error (core dumped)

Postby ergo on Sat Dec 15, 2007 6:37 pm

Hello --- long-time user, first-time poster.

I clean installed Daryna, after using Cassandra since it was released and everything worked fine on it.

I tried using gnome-terminal (using rxvt as a work-around), and totem movie player; both apps crash, giving the error "bus error (core dumped)" in the terminal (no errors given clicking icons). I booted from the install CD and both work fine there, indicating to me that there's some sort of software conflict (but I'm not a doctor).
Uninstall/reinstall of apps was a no-go - same problem.

Shall I just nuke-n-pave (aka: the m$ solution :P) and cross fingers, or is there something more circumspect I can do?

General info:
Mint is installed on an extended partition, not that it should matter?
MSI K9N SLI
Athlon X2 5600+
4GB PC6400
GeForce 8600GT (not SLI)

Possibly related to Bug #137179

I have to run, so I can't provide the usual detailed info that I usually do, but the "fix" has had variable results.

Thanks for the pointer, ER. I re-installed libc6 and libc6-i686 in synaptic (at the same time) and that did it!
This seems to be mainly affecting AMD64 systems.

Confirmed fix.
